Rails World 2023

Our Ruby on Rails developers—Gijs, Jeroen, Carsten, and Stefan—attended Rails World at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam. The two-day conference featured technical talks, demos, workshops, networking, and keynotes about the latest features and best practices in Rails development. Over 700 Rails developers attended, with 29 speakers presenting, and the event concluded with a celebration of Ruby on Rails’ 20th anniversary.

Applications of Rails

Ruby on Rails can power diverse applications, from online stores to information-sharing platforms to customer data portals. It’s particularly popular for building MVPs (Minimal Viable Products) that allow startups and companies to quickly test and validate ideas. Notable companies that have successfully used Rails include GitHub, Shopify, Airbnb, Kickstarter, and Zendesk.

What do you remember about Rails World?

Gijs: “The diversity of speakers and topics was truly impressive. I was particularly impressed by the presentation on the latest developments in Rails.”

Carsten: Networking with other professionals stood out as the highlight, providing opportunities to exchange best practices with colleagues from other companies.

Is the Rails community as strong as they say?

Gijs: “It was amazing to see how much passion there is for Rails in the community. Everyone was enthusiastic and willing to share knowledge.”

Stefan: The conference confirmed that Sping is on the right track with its focus on Rails and Digital Lab initiatives.

What are your expectations of Rails as a framework?

Gijs: The establishment of The Rails Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping Ruby on Rails independent, provides confidence for future innovation and relevance.

Jeroen: Ruby on Rails will continue to evolve and remain relevant for years to come. Choosing this framework ensures applications can scale alongside growing companies, with benefits including faster development, cost-effectiveness, and reliability—translating to lower risks and faster market validation for clients.
